Bleak House by Charles Dickens: Sir Leicester Dedlock and Lady Honoria Dedlock (his junior by more than 20 years) live at his estate of Chesney Wold. Unknown to Sir Leicester, Lady Dedlock had a lover, Captain Hawdon, before she married Sir Leicester — and had a child by him, Esther Summerson. Lady Dedlock, believing her daughter is dead, has chosen to live out her days 'bored to death' as a fashionable lady of the world.
Esther is raised by Miss Barbary, Lady Dedlock's spartan sister, who instills a sense of worthlessness in her that Esther will battle throughout the novel. Esther doesn't know that Miss Barbary is her aunt, thinking of her only as her godmother. When Miss Barbary dies, the Chancery lawyer "Conversation" Kenge takes charge of Esther's future on the instruction of his client, John Jarndyce. Jarndyce becomes Esther's guardian, and after attending school in Reading for six years, Esther moves in with him at Bleak House, along with his wards, Richard Carstone and Ada Clare. Esther is to be Ada's companion...

Esther soon befriends both Ada and Richard, who are cousins. They are beneficiaries in one of the wills at issue in Jarndyce and Jarndyce; their guardian is a beneficiary under another will, and in some undefined way the two wills conflict. Richard and Ada soon fall in love, but though Mr. Jarndyce doesn't oppose the match, he stipulates that Richard (who's inconstant) must first choose a profession. When Richard mentions the prospect of gaining from the resolution of Jarndyce and Jarndyce, John Jarndyce beseeches him never to put faith in what he calls "the family curse".
Meanwhile, Lady Dedlock is also a beneficiary under one of the wills in Jarndyce and Jarndyce. Early in the book, while listening to her solicitor, the close-mouthed but shrewd Mr. Tulkinghorn, read an affidavit aloud, she recognizes the handwriting on the copy. The sight affects her so much that she almost faints, which Tulkinghorn notes and thinks should be investigated. He traces the copyist who turns out to be a pauper known only as "Nemo" who has recently died. The only person to identify him is a street-sweeper, a poor homeless boy named Jo... These nine teens are members of the Garde, a group of Loric people gifted with special powers called "Legacies." Cêpans, who are also Loric, do not acquire legacies and most often become protectors and mentors for young members of the Garde. Four has three circular scars which begin on his right outer leg, just above his ankle, and move upward along his outer calf. Each signifies the deaths of Numbers One, Two, and Three, and burn with blue fire when they appear. These scars are present on all the Lorien teenagers, and with each death, another scar appears. Tired of running, John says that he wants to begin to make a life for himself. Henri reminds him why they run, and the conversation ends. John stands up to him, the first time he has ever stood up to anybody.

During astronomy class, John's hands begin to hurt and glow. When John is back at his house, he realizes that his first legacy has arrived. After the Mogadorians' devastating attack on Lorien, the Nine are the only surviving Lorics with legacies - and each of the Nine is gifted with a different set of legacies (though they all have telekinetic powers). Henri tells John that his first legacy is Lumen, the ability to produce light from his hands, accompanied by a developing resistance to fire. The General ambiguously concludes that he will discuss the circumstances in detail when they meet later.
Laura is saddened by the loss of a potential friend, and longs for a companion. A carriage accident outside Laura's home unexpectedly brings a girl of Laura's age into the family's care. Her name is Carmilla. Both girls instantly recognize the other from the 'dream' they both had when they were young.
Carmilla appears injured after her carriage accident, but her mysterious mother informs Laura's father that her journey is urgent and cannot be delayed. She arranges to leave her daughter with Laura and her father until she can return in three months. Before she leaves she sternly notes that her daughter will not disclose any information whatsoever about her family, past, or herself and that Carmilla is of sound mind. Laura comments that this information seems needless to say, and her father laughs it off....

Carmilla, the title character, is the original prototype for a legion of female and lesbian vampires. Though Le Fanu portrays his vampire's sexuality with the circumspection that one would expect for his time, it is evident that lesbian attraction is the main dynamic between Carmilla and the narrator of the story.
Carmilla selected exclusively female victims, though only became emotionally involved with a few. Carmilla had nocturnal habits, but was not confined to the darkness. She had unearthly beauty and was able to change her form and to pass through solid walls. Her animal alter ego was a monstrous black cat, not a large dog as in Dracula. The Son of Neptune opens with Percy Jackson being chased by the Gorgon sisters. They intend to kill Percy Jackson in order to avenge the killing of their sister Medusa 4 years ago, but Percy has amnesia and since he only remembers Annabeth from his past, does not understand why they are chasing him. He barely escapes with his life and stumbles upon a goddess named Juno. Juno gives him two options: he can carry her across the highway, through the Caldecott, and across the Little Tiber river (though she warns him that when he crosses the river he will lose the Mark of Achilles, feel pain, loss, and misery beyond anything he's ever known and slowly regain his memory); or he can retreat to the safety of the sea and live a long, happy life.

The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan: Percy Jackson chooses to carry her, and when he gets to Camp Jupiter, a camp for Roman demigods, he meets two other demigods: Hazel Levesque and Frank Zhang. Percy Jackson saves Frank from the Gorgons by creating huge hands from the water of the Little Tiber, and then uses the water of the river to rip the monsters apart. He also loses the Curse of Achilles, since it is a Greek blessing, and Greek magic is washed away by the Little Tiber as it is Roman territory. Percy Jackson is taken to the camp, Reyna, the camp praetor, initially dislikes Percy Jackson because he ruined her home (Circe's island in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series).

Percy Jackson is interviewed by Octavian, the camp augur. During the war games Percy impresses everyone by his battle skills and instincts. Mars (Ares in Greek), the god of war, then appears and claims Frank Zhang as his son, and says that Frank is to go on a quest. Octavian complains that there has been no prophecy, and Mars throws a grenade that transforms into a pen and writes a prophecy: Go to Alaska. Find Thanatos and free him. Come back by sundown on June twenty-fourth or die. Mars insists that Percy Jackson must go on the quest in order for him to learn some respect, the third person to go on the quest is up to Frank. Frank requests that Hazel also come on the quest. Percy, Frank, and Hazel are to free Thanatos, the god of Death because monsters are no longer going to Tartarus and souls are escaping from the Underworld. The fate of Ruby's family is revealed gradually through the book. A number of revelations, such as the fact that Ruby's sister Gillian dies in a road accident aged 11, are revealed to the reader long before they actually happen. However, other revelations relating the fate of various characters are withheld and revealed gradually throughout the novel, including:
The fact that Ruby had a twin sister, Pearl, who died in an accident when they were young children, for which Ruby was unfairly blamed (it was actually Gillian's fault). Ruby had lost all memory of Pearl, and so it was not until she was given hypnotherapy aged 18 that she remembers Pearl at all. We are given subtle hints of Pearl's existence earlier in the novel (e.g. the doctor looking surprised when Ruby was born as if he wasn't expecting it, the midwife inexplicably saying "Snap," Ruby's mother seeming to possess twice as many pictures of Ruby as of her other children), but because everything is told from Ruby's point of view, we are not aware of their significance.
That Ruby's great-grandmother Alice, who was believed to have died giving birth to Ruby's grandmother Nell, had actually run away with a travelling French photographer in an effort to escape her unhappy life.
The whereabouts of characters who "disappeared" from family life is not explained until nearer the end of the book: these include Nell's brother Lawrence, her sister Lillian, and Ruby's sister Patricia.
The interconnections between Ruby's family, and Doreen O'Doherty, the Irish nurse. On the first occasion Doreen is mentioned, she is introduced as the person with whom Ruby's father George is having an affair. In a flashback, we later discover that Doreen fell pregnant to Edmund, Bunty's Canadian cousin (son of Nell's sister Lillian), a pilot who was over in the UK on a tour of duty during the Second World War In the final chapter, clues allow us to surmise that the nurse who is present when Bunty dies in 1992 is the daughter of Doreen and Edmund, who Doreen gave up for adoption. He kills the Jacobi family in Birmingham on Saturday June 28 and the Leeds family in Atlanta on July 26. Two days after the latter murder, Special Agent Jack Crawford seeks out his protégé, Will Graham, a brilliant profiler who was the agent who actually captured Hannibal Lecter three years earlier, but retired after Lecter almost killed him. Crawford goes to Sugarloaf Key and pleads with Graham for his assistance, and Graham reluctantly agrees. After checking over the crime scenes, with only minimal insight, he realizes that he must once again visit Lecter and seek his help in capturing the Tooth Fairy.
The Tooth Fairy is actually a disturbed man named Francis Dolarhyde. Calling himself The Great Red Dragon (because of his obsession with the William Blake painting "The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in Sun"), Dolarhyde is unable to control his violent, sexual urges. These conditions were born from the systematic child abuse he suffered at the hands of his grandmother...

Red Dragon by Thomas Harris: Graham continues to run into complications, the first being Freddy Lounds, a tabloid reporter who follows Graham relentlessly for leads on the Tooth Fairy story. Further complicating the investigation is the secret correspondence between Lecter and Dolarhyde, where Lecter provides Dolarhyde with Graham's home address, endangering Graham's wife and child, who are evacuated to a remote farm which belongs to Crawford's brother. Graham discovers the secret communication and tries to intercept it without Lecter's knowledge but the doctor is quick to realize that the Feds are onto him and his protégé and humiliates the authorities by upping the stakes: in return for his help in capturing the Tooth Fairy, he requests a first-class meal in his cell and having his book privileges returned.
Hoping to lure the Tooth Fairy into a trap, Graham gives Lounds an interview in which he characterizes the killer as an impotent homosexual. This provokes Dolarhyde, who kidnaps Lounds, forces him to recant his allegations, sets him on fire and deposits his charred but alive body outside his newspaper's offices...

At about the same time, Dolarhyde falls in love with a blind co-worker named Reba McClane. Dolarhyde's new-found love conflicts with his homicidal urges, which manifest themselves in his mind as an alternate personality he calls "The Great Red Dragon". After beginning a relationship with Reba, Dolarhyde attempts to stop the Dragon's "possession" of him; he goes to the Brooklyn Museum, beats a museum secretary unconscious, and eats the original Blake watercolor of The Red Dragon.
Graham eventually realizes that the killer knew the layout of his victims' houses from their home cine films, which he only could have seen if he worked for the film processing lab that develops home movies. Dolarhyde's job gives him access to all home movies that pass through the company. The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger: Andrea Sachs had recently graduated Brown with a degree in English when she left her home in Avon, Connecticut for New York City. There she moved in with her longtime friend Lily, now doing graduate studies in Russian at Columbia. Sachs, a longtime reader of The New Yorker, blankets the magazine publishing industry with her résumé, hoping to land enough experience somewhere to eventually get her a job at the prestigious weekly. She gets a surprise interview at the Elias-Clark group and is hired on as Miranda's junior assistant. While she knows little of Miranda, she is told repeatedly that "a million girls would die for your job".
People at the magazine are afraid of finding themselves alone in an elevator with Miranda, or making critical remarks about her even to their close friends. Andrea dubs this attitude the Runway Paranoid Turnaround, as whenever one of her co-workers makes the slightest negative comment about Miranda, they immediately follow it up with a "turnaround" positive comment, due to their fear of their boss finding out about their attitude and firing them...

All the same, Andrea is told that if she manages to work for Miranda for a year, she can have her select pick of jobs within the magazine industry, so she valiantly struggles onward. Even in the present, the perks are generous — between Runway's notorious "closet" of designer clothes ostensibly "on loan" for photo shoots but rarely returned and often "borrowed" by the staff and the general obsequiousness she encounters as Miranda Priestly's personal assistant, she is able to acquire enough free designer clothing to fit in better with the rest of the fashionable Runway staff. Eventually, she develops an appreciation for it and stops incurring Miranda's displeasure. She gets a Bang and Olufsen phone for free when Miranda does not want it, and learns that Elias-Clark's policies regarding expense accounts are rather lax, to the benefit of herself and her friends... Dead to the World is the fourth book in Charlaine Harris's series The Southern Vampire Mysteries, released in 2004. They do so and with Sookie's assistance, brutally attack the witches' main gathering place, wiping out everyone present but Hallow, whom Pam captures and forces to lift Eric's amnesia. Sookie returns home dismayed at the loss of her "relationship" with the memory-free Eric, and finally retrieves Jason with Sam's help in Hotshot, a local were-panther community. In Hotshot, Felton Norris, romantically interested in Jason's one-time fling Crystal, also a werepanther, had contained Jason and purposefully bit him to change him into a werepanther, so that Crystal would lose her interest in Jason... Victor Frankenstein, having applied his own research to extending his own mortality, is now known to the world as Victor Helios. To the public, Helios is a philanthropic millionaire and a beneficiary to mankind. In reality, he has experienced much in two hundred years since he created a man from fragments of the corpses of criminals. However, in secret, Helios has become obsessed with overthrowing true humans, which he refers to as "the Old Race," and replacing them with his superior creations.
After the failure of his first rebellious monster, he put himself through extensive bodily modifications to extend his life span and increase his physical power (the details are unknown, but it is hinted he used a method similar to that which created the monster, possibly replacing organs from healthy victims over the years). Plague is the fourth book in a young-adult supernatural dystopian novel series written by Michael Grant. The first novel in the Gone series, also entitled Gone, was originally published in 2008. The second book, Hunger, was released a year later, followed by the third book, Lies, on May 4, 2010. This fourth, released on April 5, 2011, is titled Plague; books 5 and 6 will be entitled Fear and Light respectively.
Michael Grant's book Plague starts with a short chapter about Pete Ellison which describes life from his point of view. Sam Temple is revealed to be drunk after seeing Brittney/Drake earlier in the day and feeling particularly low about his and Astrid's relationship decline. Sam had obtained the alcohol previously stating that he was "confiscating" it from Orc and Howard, he did not intend to drink any but invariably ended up consuming the entire pack when he is at the clifftop that Mary Terrafino committed suicide from. In blind drunken rage he attacks the FAYZ wall but his efforts yield no result; whilst he is up on the clifftop Taylor "bounces" up to see him and they end up kissing...

Plague by Michael Grant: The next chapter focuses initially on Diana at the island home, who has qualms about what she has done and decides to become a better person and perhaps reform Caine as well. The second half of the chapter deals with three previously unknown girls Jennifer B, Jennifer H and Jennifer L; all three Jennifers are suffering from the new epidemic of flu that was mentioned in the last book, however the flu has escalated and mutated into a new strain which causes the victims to literally cough up their lungs. After Jennifer H dies from the flu, Jennifer B crawls to the make-shift hospital to warn Dahra Baidoo of the deadly disease, however Dahra mistakes her warning as feverish hallucinations. Lana the healer also finds that her healing powers are ineffective against the flu virus and she is helpless to prevent it spreading. Meanwhile, Hunter the brain-damaged hunter has been stalking a lion to kill "for the kids" but he is hampered by a small growth on his shoulder: "The thing on Hunter's shoulder squirmed. It was growing. Moving."
Soon enough Perdido beach is running out of water, and so Albert sends Sam on a mission to find new water supplies over at Lake Tramonto, almost directly opposite Perdido beach. Sam and a few others thus embark on their walk, however on the way they encounter Hunter who is attempting suicide with his microwave ability in order to kill the insects hatching inside of him. It is revealed that Jack and Brianna are 'kind of going out' in this book after continuing living together during the epidemic in Lies. Dekka and Hunter pray together and Sam burns Hunter with his light; but far from destroying the insects with him he finds that his ability is ineffectual against them. A new pack leader, who is also infected by the insects, is at the scene and Sam commands pack leader to take them to where "the Greenies"(described as snakes with leather wings that excrete a green liquid, Hunter earlier was infected with this liquid) cave is situated; pack leader willingly leads them there on the premise that Sam will burn him afterwards...

Orc has been left alone by Howard so that Orc can guard Brittney/Drake; whilst Howard is out Jamal (Albert's personal bodyguard) comes round to visit Orc for alcohol. Jamal accidentally provokes Orc and as a result of the ensuing melée Brittney/Drake is release, currently in Drake's form. Drake ensures that Jamal will serve him and involves him in his plan to see the Gaiaphage.
On their way to the lake and after battling off the giant insects, Sam, Jack, and Dekka come across the military base nearby and search it in hope of food. When they enter the offices they finally find Nutella, however Sam realizes that there must be someone currently there and goes off to investigate ... in Plague by Michael Grant. Jack Reacher is a former United States Army Military Police Major. He was born on a military base in Berlin on October 29, 1960. At age 24, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris: It is revealed that Jack Crawford is hunting for a serial killer dubbed "Buffalo Bill", whose modus operandi involves kidnapping overweight women, starving them for about a week, and then killing and skinning them, before dumping the bodies in nearby rivers. The nickname was started by Kansas City Homicide, as a joke that "he likes to skin his humps." Throughout the investigation, Starling periodically returns to Lecter in search of information, and the two form a strange relationship in which he offers her cryptic clues in return for information about her unhappy childhood as an orphan.
When Bill's sixth victim is found in West Virginia, Starling helps Crawford perform the autopsy. Starling finds a moth pupa in the throat of the victim, and just as Lecter predicted, she has been scalped. Diamond-shaped patches of skin have also been taken from her shoulders. Furthermore, autopsy reports indicate that Bill killed her within four days of her capture, much faster than his earlier victims. On the basis of Lecter's prediction, Starling believes that he knows who Buffalo Bill really is. She also asks why she was sent to fish for information on Buffalo Bill without being told she was doing so; Crawford explains that if she had had an agenda, Lecter would never have spoken up...

Starling takes the pupa to the Smithsonian, where it is eventually identified as the Death's-head Hawkmoth, which would not naturally occur where the victim was found.
In Tennessee, Catherine Baker Martin, the daughter of Senator Ruth Martin, is kidnapped. Within six hours, her blouse is found on the roadside, slit up the back: Buffalo Bill's calling card. Crawford is advised that no less than the President of the United States has expressed "intense interest" in the case, and that a successful rescue is preferable. Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris: Lecter, his sister Mischa and his parents escape to the family's hunting lodge in the woods to elude the advancing German troops. After three years, the Nazis are finally driven out of the countries now occupied by the Soviet Union. During their retreat, however, a German Stuka destroys a Soviet tank that had stopped at the Lecter family's lodge looking for water. The explosion kills everyone but Lecter and Mischa. They survive in the cottage until six former Lithuanian militiamen, led by a Nazi collaborator named Vladis Grutas, storm and loot it. Finding no other food, they kill and cannibalize Mischa, while Lecter watches helplessly. He blacks out and is later found wandering and mute by a Soviet tank crew that takes him back to Lecter Castle, which is now a Soviet orphanage. Thomas Harris's novel Hannibal Rising Lecter is removed from the orphanage by his uncle, a noted painter, and he goes to live with him in France. The happiness of their lives together is cut short with his uncle's sudden death. Most of the estate is taken for death duties.
Lecter goes to live in reduced circumstances with his Japanese aunt, Lady Murasaki, and they develop a special, quasi-romantic relationship. While in France, Lecter flourishes as a medical student. He commits his first murder as a teenager, killing a local butcher who insulted Murasaki. He is suspected of the butcher's murder by Inspector Popil, a French detective who also lost his family during the war. Thanks in part to Murasaki's intervention, however, Lecter escapes responsibility for the crime.
Lecter divides his time between medical school in France and hunting those who killed and cannibalized his sister. One by one, he crosses paths with Grutas' men, killing them all in the most inventively gruesome ways possible. Eventually, Popil arrests Lecter, but Lecter is freed when popular support for his dispatch of war criminals combines with a lack of hard evidence. While Lecter avoids prison, he loses his relationship with Murasaki, who tells him that there is nothing human left in him. Long ago, an aide of that politician had lunch with a member of a terrorist organization. In that restaurant, the owner snapped several pictures of his customers, including the aide and terrorist. Later on, the terrorist was recognized as member of a terrorist organization, while the politician became popular. Fearful that his relationship with this terrorist organization would become known, the politician had sent the hitman to attack several customers who were in the pictures...

Linda Paquette was one of them. The FBI agent apologized for causing so much trouble to Linda and Tim, but suggested he might blackmail Tim if any of them said anything about it. Moments later, Linda discovered Tim won the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving numerous civilians during his experiences as a soldier. As the FBI agent had said, a person under so much strain and stress might even go insane at the end. However, Tim's neighbor had some of the FBI agents on videotape, and Tim sent it to the current American president (which he knew from their old days at the army) to capture those corrupt in the government. The immediate appearance of the barrier causes a number of injuries and fatalities, and traps former Army Captain Dale "Barbie" Barbara—who is trying to leave Chester's Mill—inside the town...

Under the Dome by Stephen King: Police Chief Howard "Duke" Perkins is soon killed when his pacemaker explodes after getting too close to the barrier. This removes the last significant opposition to James "Big Jim" Rennie, used car salesman and the town's Second Selectman. Big Jim exerts significant influence within Chester's Mill, and seizes the opportunity to use the barrier as part of a power play to take over the town.
Big Jim appoints one of his cronies, the incompetent Peter Randolph as the new Police Chief. He also begins expanding the ranks of the Chester's Mill Police with questionable candidates, including his son, Junior Rennie, and his friends. As Big Jim covertly encourages and orchestrates unease and panic among the town to build up his grab for power, Barbie, Julia and a number of other townspeople attempt to stop things from spiraling out of control. After crossing Rennie's path on several occasions, Barbie is framed and arrested for Junior's murders. He is also accused of killing Reverend Lester Coggins, who laundered money for Rennie's large-scale methamphetamine operation, and Duke's widow Brenda Perkins, who were both murdered by Big Jim. While Barbie is in jail other residents track the source of the Dome to an abandoned farm, and the device is strongly indicated to be extraterrestrial in origin. The restrictions issued by Rennie become more severe and the police force grows more abusive, galvanizing the town and eventually leading some residents to break Barbie out of jail, killing Junior seconds before he can murder Barbie.
The semi-organized resistance flees to the abandoned farm, where multiple people touch the strange object and experience visions. They not only conclude that the device was put in place by extraterrestrial "leatherheads" (so named for their appearance), but that specifically they are juveniles who have set up the Dome as a cruel form of entertainment, a sort of ant farm used to capture sentient beings and allow their captors to view everything that happens inside... Verger enlists the help of Rinaldo Pazzi, a disgraced Italian police inspector, and Paul Krendler, a corrupt Justice Department official. Hannibal kills Pazzi and returns to the United States to escape Verger's Sardinian henchmen, only to be captured. After helping kill Verger, Hannibal rescues Starling and takes her to his rented lake house to treat her, after she was shot with several tranquilizer darts. During her time there Hannibal keeps her sedated, attempting to transform her into his dead sister Mischa through a regimen of classical conditioning and mind-altering drugs. One day, Hannibal invites her to a formal dinner where the guest and first course is Paul Krendler, whose brain they consume together. On this night, Starling tells Hannibal that Mischa's memory can live within him instead of taking her place. She then offers him her breast, and they become lovers. After having the baby in Philadelphia (her parents have no knowledge of her pregnancy, but her older sister does), she quit swimming because she wasn't physically or emotionally up to it. Emily has now given up hope of getting a scholarship, her only option for college. Chloe's dad offers to help, but also hits on Emily. Chloe walks in on her dad kissing Emily but thinks that it's Emily who is wrecking her family (her father had previously been cheating). Emily didn't tell Chloe, making Chloe hate her...

The girls start to get messages from a new A, and believe it's Ali and that she somehow survived the fall from the building. Hanna's dad runs for senator of Pennsylvania and Patrick, somebody who's helping out at the set, offers Hanna a modeling job. But, he takes some naughty pictures and threatens her with them, saying he will release them to the public and ruin her dad's chances of becoming senator; unless she pays him $10,000. Hanna steals money from her dad and frames Jeremiah, a mean man who is her dad's assistant. Spencer's mom has begun to date Nicolas Pennythistle, the father of snotty Amelia and her brother Zach, in whom Spencer develops a romantic interest. When they go out dancing, she kisses him, only to find out Zach is gay. When the Hastings and Pennythistles travel to New York together, they go out to dinner and Mrs. Hastings and Mr.Pennythistle announce their engagement. Spencer and Zach drunkenly fall asleep in the same bed. During the night, Spencer had kicked off her skirt because she was hot, leaving her in her blouse and underwear. The next morning Mr. Pennythistle wakes Zach by entering the room. Their indecent clothing and close proximity leads Mr. Pennythistle to believe that they had slept together and acts violent towards Zach. Spencer tells him that Zach didn't touch her and that he's gay, hoping to stop Zach's father and her soon to be step-father from pounding on his son, but Mr. Pennythistle becomes furious and sends Zach to military school. Zach and Spencer's friendship ends. Also, the book tells that Spencer has a hidden secret that she clawed her way to the top to get accepted into her dream college; Princeton. It doesn't give any details but it involves a past friend from before Spencer and Ali were friends. In the end of the book, the news turns on and a teenage girl's dead body was found floating in the water in Jamaica. They identify this girl as Tabitha Clark from New Jersey. One day Billy finds an article in a sportsman magazine offering a pair of Red Bone coonhounds in Kentucky for $25 each. Billy decides to earn the money himself. For two years, he works many different jobs, and manages to save $50. His grandfather writes to the kennel and finds out that the dogs have dropped in price by $5 each. He sends for two Redbone hound puppies.
The mail does not deliver packages, and so the puppies have to be sent to the depot at Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Billy travels on his own by walking to the depot in Tahlequah and gets his puppies. With the extra ten dollars, Billy buys gifts for his family: a pair of overalls for his dad, cloth for making dresses for his mom and sisters, and a bag of candy for his sisters. On the way back home, he spends the night in Robber's Cave on Sparrow Hawk Mountain. There he builds a fire and plays with his puppies. While trying to sleep, he hears a noise that at first seems like a woman screaming, but he soon realizes it is really the scream of a mountain lion from far away. Both the puppies run to mouth of the cave and challenge the devil cat. Billy worries for his dogs, and he remembers that his father told him "mountain lions are scared of fire," so he makes fire and waits for morning. In the morning, Billy continues on. He comes to a tree and sees the names Dan and Ann carved inside a heart into the bark and decides to name his dogs Old Dan and Little Ann...

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls: To train his dogs, Billy catches a raccoon with the help of his grandfather and uses the fur to teach them how to trail a raccoon. During their training, the dogs' personalities become apparent: Old Dan is brave and strong, while Little Ann is very intelligent. Both are very loyal to each other and to Billy.
On the first day of the hunting season, Billy takes his dogs out for their very first hunt. He promises them if they tree a raccoon, he will do the rest. The dogs are very ready to chase their first raccoon in a large tree, which Billy had before nicknamed "the Big Tree", and it is one of the largest trees in the woods. As he tries to call his well-trained dogs off the hunt, they look at him sadly and he cuts down the enormous tree to keep his promise — an exhausting effort that takes him a few days of chopping and costs him blistered hands. In the end, when about to give up his effort, he offers a short prayer for strength to continue...

Mysteriously, a strong wind starts to blow and the tree comes crashing down. Old Dan and Little Ann take the raccoon down.
Billy, Old Dan and Little Ann go out hunting almost every night. As months go by, Billy brings more fur into his grandfather's store than any other hunter, and the stories of his dogs spread throughout the Ozarks. Not long after earning local fame, two boys named Rubin and Rainie, of the Pritchard family, challenge Billy to a raccoon hunting contest. They say that no hound could ever chase the "ghost raccoon," a raccoon that lives near the Pritchards' home. Billy tries to ignore the challenge, but the Pritchards are mean, and start to talk about Billy's grandfather. His grandfather grows furious and tells Billy to accept the challenge so that Old Dan and Little Ann can chase it. After a few days of hunting and going through the ghost raccoon's tricks, Little Ann chases the raccoon. When Billy does not want to kill it, starting to give respect for the animal, Rubin and Rainie get angry, and at that time the Pritchards' Bluetick Coonhound comes up and challenges Old Dan. Rubin tells Billy that his dog will easily beat Old Dan, then, Little Ann joins to protect Old Dan and the Bluetick Coonhound loses quickly. Rubin worries for his dog's life and grabs Billy's axe and runs toward Old Dan and Little Ann, trying to kill them. Rubin then trips, falls on his axe and dies as a result of the injuries. Billy made visits to the Pritchard's Family cemetery on their property, to leave flowers on Rubin's Grave. On one of the visits he was possibly spotted by Rubin's mother... (Summary by Wikipedia)

After escaping his family and running off to Paris with his friend and confidante Nicolas de Lenfent (nicknamed Nicki by Lestat), Lestat is kidnapped and bitten by the rogue elder vampire Magnus, who orphans him on the night he is made. Later, his dying mother, Gabrielle, arrives to say goodbye to him. In order to save her, Lestat bites her, transforming her into his first companion. Lestat abandons Nicki for fear of causing him harm and shuns contact with his loved ones. He later turns Nicki into a vampire after Armand kidnaps him and they begin to grow apart because of Nicki's sullenness; he later commits suicide by "going into the fire," from severe depression...

The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice: Armand "shows" Lestat the history of how he was made by Marius. Compelled by the idea of Marius, Lestat leaves markings carved into rock in numerous places while traveling with Gabrielle, hoping that one day, Marius will see them and find Lestat. Whilst in Egypt, abandoned by Gabrielle, Lestat sleeps in the ground and is recovered by Marius who takes him to his Mediterranean island. Then, Marius shares his past with him, and shows him Those Who Must Be Kept, Akasha and Enkil. Once Marius has given his warning to Lestat not to go see them again and leaves on a short outing, Lestat takes Nicolas's old violin and plays for the King and Queen, awakening them. Akasha feeds from Lestat as Lestat feeds from her. Then, Enkil, furious as ever, nearly kills Lestat, who is saved by Marius, and sent away.
The book The Vampire Lestat ends on a cliffhanger after Lestat's debut concert in San Francisco, and leads directly into the Vampire Chronicles' third volume, The Queen of the Damned...

A film adaptation for The Vampire Lestat was originally supposed to go right into development after the filming of Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, with a theatrical release that was said to have been marked for the late 1990s. The film adaptation was highly anticipated and is still to this day. Neil Jordan, director of Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, took on the opportunity of adapting the novel. However, not only did development lead no where, there was much stress brought on by the project as time was limited before the novels rights would revert back to Anne Rice. Anne Rice confirmed there being difficulty during the project at the time, describing the process as "stressful" for Warner Bros., and admitting there was "no good news" regarding the possible theatrical film. An Eldunarí allows the holder to communicate with or draw energy from the dragon it belongs to, even if the dragon is deceased. The novel Eragon begins with a prologue. A Shade – a sorcerer possessed by evil spirits – named Durza and several Urgals kill two Elves and chase Arya (an Elven-lady) through a forest. Arya has a blue stone, later revealed to be a dragon egg. Arya is captured, but sends the egg to the Spine using magic to keep it safe. It is later revealed that the egg was sent to the Spine due to its close proximity to Carvahall, where an ally of Arya lives.
Eragon lives with his uncle Garrow and cousin Roran on a farm on the borders of a small village called Carvahall. While hunting in the Spine, a large and feared mountain range, Eragon is surprised to see a polished blue stone appear in front of him. A few days later, Eragon witnesses a baby dragon hatch from the "stone", and realizes that it is actually a dragon egg. Eragon names the dragon Saphira. He raises the dragon in secret until two of King Galbatorix's servants, the Ra'zac, come to Carvahall looking for the egg. Eragon and Saphira manage to escape by hiding in the forest, but Garrow is fatally wounded and the house and farm are burned down by the Ra'zac. Once Garrow dies, Eragon is left with no reason to stay in Carvahall, so he goes after the Ra'zac, seeking vengeance for the destruction of his home and his uncle's death. Eragon is accompanied by Brom, an elderly story-teller, who insists on helping him and Saphira.

The expedition, searching for deposits of valuable diamonds, discovered the legendary lost city of Zinj (in Arabic Zinj or Zanj refers to the southern part of the East African coast). A video image taken by a camera there, and transmitted by satellite to the base station in Houston, shows a peculiar race of gorillas to be responsible for the murders...

Congo by Michael Crichton: Another expedition, led by Karen Ross, is launched to find out the truth and to find the city of Zinj, where there are believed to be deposits of a certain diamond, type IIb, which are naturally boron-coated and thus useful as superconductors, though worthless as gemstones. This time the searchers bring along the famous White African mercenary Munro, as well as a female gorilla named Amy, who has been trained to communicate with humans using sign language, and her trainer Peter Elliot. Time is of the greatest essence, as a rival consortium of Japan, Germany, and Holland has also set off into the jungle after the diamonds, turning the entire expedition into a race to the city of Zinj. Unfortunately for Ross and her team, the American expedition encounters many delays along the way, including plane crashes, native civil wars, and jungle predators...

Eventually, Ross and her expedition reach the City of Zinj and discover the consortium camp, like the original expedition's camp, in ruins and devoid of life. Ross and her team lose contact with the ERTS HQ due to a massive solar flare, then encounter the killer gorillas and are attacked. A brief battle ensues and several gorillas are killed. After studying the corpses and performing a rudimentary field autopsy, it is concluded the animals are not "true" gorillas by modern biological standards, but presumably a gorilla-chimpanzee or gorilla-human hybrid: their mass and height is closer to humans than gorillas, their skull is greatly malformed (the "ridge" that makes gorilla heads look "pointy" is nearly nonexistent) as well as their pigmentation is on the border of albinism: light gray fur and yellow eyes... It is a 1986 horror novel by American author Stephen King. The story follows the exploits of seven children as they are terrorized by the eponymous inter-dimensional predatory life-form that exploits the fears and phobias of its victims in order to disguise itself whilst hunting its prey. "It" primarily appears in the form of "Bob Gray" a.k.a. "Pennywise the Dancing Clown", described by characters who see It as resembling a combination of Bozo, Clarabell and Ronald McDonald, in order to attract its preferred prey of young children. The novel is told through narratives alternating between two time periods, which is largely told in a third-person omniscient view. It deals with themes which would eventually become King staples: the power of memory, childhood trauma and the ugliness lurking beneath a façade of traditional small-town values. The novel won the British Fantasy Award in 1987, and received nominations for the Locus and World Fantasy Awards that same year. Publishers Weekly listed It as the best-selling book in America in 1986.

It by Stephen King: "It" apparently originated in a void containing and surrounding the universe, a place referred to in the novel as the "Macroverse" (a concept similar[original research?] to the later established Todash Darkness of The Dark Tower series). It's most commonly used name is Bob Gray or Pennywise (at several points in the novel, It claims its true name to be Robert Gray) and is christened "It" by the group of children who later confront It. Likewise, It's true form is never truly comprehended. It's favorite form is that of a clown (with fangs and large claws when It stalks a child) known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, and It's final form in the physical realm is that of an enormous female spider, although It is possibly male (or more likely has no gender). The Losers Club considers It female. It's spider form is the closest the human mind can get to approximating It's actual physical form. It's natural form exists in a realm beyond the physical, in the area past the edge of the universe, a form which It calls the "deadlights." As such, the deadlights are never seen in their entirety, only partly shown through a metaphysical cage that surrounds our universe and It's true form outside the physical world is revealed to only be writhing, destructive orange lights. Coming face to face with the deadlights drives any living being instantly insane (a common H. P. Lovecraft device), if not killed outright. Bill comes dangerously close to seeing the deadlights, but successfully defeats It before this happens, though during their first confrontation with It, Ben believes that he nearly sees It's true form, and nearly panics as a result. The only known person to face the deadlights and survive is Bill's wife, Audra Phillips, whose encounter with the deadlights nevertheless renders her temporarily catatonic...

Beings that It kills or has something to do with the death of are seemingly absorbed into It's consciousness, and it is somewhat implied that they 'never truly die'. At certain times some beings that It takes the form of seem to have a small amount of autonomy such as when the corpse of Belch Huggins gives Henry a ride to the Derry Townhouse and gives Henry strange looks but says nothing at all and when Beverly's father screams about his desire to rape her. It has also shown the power to possess people, lulling them into a dream-like state where they are hardly aware of their actions and simply behave violently or ignore the violence at hand.

She goes to live with the Hermanns (the mayor and his wife) and when Alex Steiner (Rudy's father, drafted into war) returns, she works in his tailor shop. In 1945, Max Vandenburg walks into the shop, and he and Liesel are reunited.

As part of Bond's cover as a rich Jamaican playboy, M also assigns as his companion Vesper Lynd, personal assistant to the Head of Section S (Soviet Union). The French Deuxième Bureau and the CIA also send agents as observers. Bond initially considers Vesper simply as a nuisance, but grows to have romantic feelings for her.
The game soon turns into an intense confrontation between Le Chiffre and Bond; Le Chiffre wins the first round, bankrupting Bond, and Vesper refuses to stake him any higher. Lynd visits Bond every day as he recuperates in the hospital, and he gradually realises that he loves her; he even contemplates leaving Her Majesty's Secret Service to settle down with her. When Bond is released, they spend time together at a quiet guest house, and eventually become lovers. One day, they see a mysterious man named Gettler tracking their movements, which greatly distresses Vesper. The following morning, Bond finds that she has committed suicide. She leaves behind a note explaining that she had been working as an unwilling double agent for the MVD. SMERSH had kidnapped her lover, a Polish RAF pilot, who had revealed information about her under torture; SMERSH then used that information to blackmail her into helping them undermine Bond's mission, including her own faked kidnapping. She had tried to start a new life with Bond, but upon seeing Gettler – a SMERSH agent – she realised that she would never be free of her tormentors, and that staying with Bond would only put him in danger.

The Negotiator by Frederick Forsyth: With the help of a disaffected Arabist, Colonel Robert Easterhouse, Miller and his shipping tycoon counterpart Melvyn Scanlon devise a plan to inspire Islamic fundamentalists to massacre the six hundred ruling members of the Saudi royal family during jamboree celebrations; after that, American forces will go into Saudi Arabia to restore the only surviving royal - a Westernized puppet named Prince Abdullah - to power and thus secure the oil for the United States - and for Miller and Scanlon's companies. However, Easterhouse warns that Cormack won't be prepared to jeopardize the Nantucket Treaty by sending troops into the Middle East; he must be ousted from power and replaced by his vice-president, Michael Odell, who opposes the treaty. Quinn refuses, telling the police and FBI it is dangerous to agree to a kidnapper's first demand. After two weeks of negotiation, they agree on a $2 million ransom, in diamonds. Meanwhile, a maverick FBI agent does his own investigations and leads a raid on a house where he believes the President's son is held; but it turns out that all he has done is ruin an attempt by the British police to arrest a top international drug smuggler.
A fake news report that the police are closing in spooks the kidnappers; Quinn decides to steal the diamonds, evade the police and FBI and set up the ransom drop himself. He and Simon are released at different points of a deserted road. As Simon runs towards Quinn and the police, he is killed in an explosion.
President Cormack is devastated when he learns of his son's death. The possibility of the president being removed under the terms of the 25th Amendment is brought up. A postmortem shows that Simon was killed by a bomb hidden in the belt given to him by his kidnappers. The bomb was set off by a miniature detonator - minidet - found, and only found, in the Soviet space programme. The Russians are blamed and the Nantucket Treaty is effectively finished.
Quinn is arrested by the police but let go for lack of evidence. He decides to go after the kidnappers himself, and Sam - who has become Quinn's lover - is sent by the FBI to follow him. Quinn thinks one of the kidnappers was a Belgian mercenary, due to his ease with a gun and the smell of his Bastos cigarettes. Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison: In the beginning, the main character lives in a small town in the South. He is a model student, even being named his high school's valedictorian. Having written and delivered an excellent paper about the struggles of the average black man, he gets to tell his speech to a group of important white men. However, he is first forced to fight a humiliating "battle royal" with other young black men. The battle royal consists of the young black men fighting blindfolded in a boxing ring while their white superiors watch in enjoyment. (The Battle Royale scene is not a hallucination.) The young black men then are required to fight over metal coins that have been put on an electric rug. When they touch the rug they are electrically shocked, which greatly amuses the white powers that be of the city as they look on.
After finally giving his speech, he gets a scholarship to an all-black college that is clearly modeled on the Tuskegee Institute...

During his junior year at the college, the narrator takes Mr. Norton, a visiting rich white trustee, on a drive in the country. He accidentally drives to the house of Jim Trueblood, a black man living on the college's outskirts, who impregnated his own daughter. Trueblood, though disgraced by his fellow blacks, has found greater support from whites. After hearing Trueblood's story and giving Trueblood a hundred dollar bill, Mr. Norton faints, then asks for some alcohol to help his condition, prompting the narrator to take him to a local tavern. At the Golden Day tavern, Norton passes in and out of consciousness as World War I veterans being treated at the nearby mental hospital for various mental health issues occupy the bar and a fight breaks out among them. One of the veterans claims to be a doctor and tends to Mr. Norton. The dazed and confused Mr. Norton is not fully aware of what’s going on, as the veteran doctor chastises the actions of the trustee and the young black college student. Through all the chaos, the narrator manages to get the recovered Mr. Norton back to the campus after a day of unusual events...

A Dance with Dragons was originally the title of the second novel in the sequence, when George R. R. Martin still envisioned the series as a trilogy. Some early U. S. editions of A Game of Thrones (1996) list A Dance of Dragons as the forthcoming second volume in the series. The 1998 anthology Legends, which features the novella The Hedge Knight from the same universe, lists A Dance of Dragons as the fourth installment of the series. Like the previous four volumes in the Ice and Fire series, the book includes a lengthy appendix, with the volume running a total of 1022 pages.
Set in a fictitious world reminiscent of Medieval Eurasia in which magic exists and the seasons can last for many years, A Song of Ice and Fire follows the violent dynastic struggles of an empire in turmoil. The novel Watership Down begins in a warren with Fiver, a young rabbit, who is considered a runt by the warren and yet is also a seer, receiving a frightening vision of his warren's imminent destruction. He and his brother Hazel, the main character of the novel who at this point is low in the rabbit hierarchy, attempt to persuade their chief rabbit of the danger facing them, but are ignored because of Fiver's inability to accurately describe this danger. Watership Down by Richard Adams: The traveling group of rabbits find themselves following the leadership of Hazel, a role reversal because of his previous position as an unimportant member of the warren. They travel through dangerous territory with Bigwig and Silver (both former Owsla) and Buckthorn as the only significantly strong rabbits among them.
The company copes with many dangers and meets a rabbit called Cowslip, who invites the group back to be members of his warren. Here, the company encounter an apparently prosperous rabbit colony with ample food and protection from predators by a human whose farm is near their warren. However, Fiver is profoundly suspicious, especially when he observes that these rabbits do not tell the customary tales of El-ahrairah but instead recite fatalistic poetry. When Fiver attempts to leave, Bigwig learns firsthand the deadly secret of the warren: the whole area is a human-designed rabbit farm with numerous snares placed to harvest them. After helping Bigwig escape from a snare, Fiver exposes his fellows to the warren's horrific secret, effectively convincing them to flee this honey trap of a colony immediately. One of the rabbits in Cowslip's warren, named Strawberry, joins them at this point.
Fiver's visions promise a safe place in which to settle, and the group eventually finds Watership Down, an ideal location to set up their new warren. They are soon reunited with Captain Holly and Bluebell, also from the original warren, who reveal that Fiver's vision was true and the entire warren was destroyed by humans...

Everything is peaceful for a while before Hazel encounters a problem. Hazel realizes there are no does, making the continuation of their new home an impossibility. With the help of a seagull named Kehaar whom they have befriended, they locate a nearby warren, Efrafa, which is overcrowded and has many does.
Hazel sends a small delegation to this warren, composed of Captain Holly, Silver, Buckthorn, and Strawberry, to present their request for does. While waiting for the group to return, Hazel makes a reconnaissance trip with Pipkin to a nearby farm to talk with a group of hutch rabbits who live there, partly in their quest for does but also because of Hazel's curiosity. They discover there are indeed does at the farm and, against the advice of the clairvoyant Fiver, decide to gather a raiding party to attempt to bring them to Watership Down. They don't successfully bring back any does, but they bring back news that there are in fact does there.
Hazel and the trustworthy yet diminutive Pipkin bring back the tidings to Watership Down, setting the stage for an adventurous and daring raid. Hazel and Bigwig, along with a group of four others, venture out to the farm and bring the hutch rabbits to Watership Down. The Throne of Fire by Rick Riordan: Ever since the gods of Ancient Egypt were unleashed in the modern world, Carter Kane and his sister Sadie have been in trouble. As descendants of the House of Life, the Kanes have some powers at their command, but the devious gods haven't given them much time to master their skills at Brooklyn House, which has become a training ground for young magicians. And now their most threatening enemy yet—the chaos snake Apophis—is rising. If they don't prevent him from breaking free in a few days' time, the world will come to an end. The story begins with Carter and Sadie breaking in to the Brooklyn Museum during a wedding to search for the Book of Ra, which will allow them to speak with Ra to help them imprison/kill Apophis the lord of chaos. Along with them are Khufu the baboon, and their new trainees, Jaz and Walt. Instead, they find a papyrus scroll that is booby trapped with a series of fire traps. As Carter and Walt distract the demons that are apart of the booby trap, Jaz perform a spell that banishes the demons back to the Duat, but Jaz ends up falling into a coma. After this, Carter uses the Griffin to escape from the museum before the police arrives. When they arrive back in the mansion, Carter explains to the new trainees that they must try to find Ra, the sun god, before Apophis wakes in four days and swallows the sun as well as all of existence. They also find out that to do this, they must find the 3 scrolls that control the embodiments of Ra, one of them being the scroll that Sadie found in the museum. However, new enemies await, such as Vladimir (Menshikov) who serves Apophis and holds one of the key scrolls in freeing Ra.

The title, The Throne of Fire, was announced in a blog post by Rick Riordan on January 13, 2011. The book The Throne of Fire became available worldwide on May 3, 2011.
Rick Riordan released on his website that the third book of the series will be coming in spring 2012.

Main characters:

Carter Kane: (Age 14) Carter is a descendant of Narmer and Ramesses the Great through both sides of his family. He is one of the main protagonists, and ,in the first book, is described as always dressing "impeccably" in dress shirts and pants, but eventually relaxes into a more modern style. He has dark skin with dark curly brown hair and brown eyes. After the death of his mother, he spent six years traveling with his father and living out of a suitcase. His specialty is combat magic and his preferred weapon is a Khopesh, an Ancient Egyptian sword. He first becomes the host of Horus until the end of The Red Pyramid. He is attracted to Zia Rashid.

Sadie Kane: (Ages 13) Sadie is Carter's sister, and like him, has magic in her blood. She looks more like her mother and doesn't look like her dad or Carter. She is also the descendant of Narmer and Ramesses the Great. She was raised in England by her grandparents after her mother died. She has light skin, caramel colored hair with a lone streak varying from color to color, blue eyes, always wears combat boots and is as tall as her brother, Carter. Sadie loves chewing bubble gum and listening to her iPod. She is a learning magician and is a talented spell caster. She can read hieroglyphics, understand Egyptian, and becomes the host of Isis after her father releases five gods at the London Museum. She is skilled at most types of magic and is also known for her sharp tongue. She immediately becomes attracted to Anubis, the god of death and funerals who serves Osiris in the Underworld. She later develops a crush on Walt, one of the new trainees.
